MOBILES at 2025 ASBMB Annual Meeting in Chicago

The 2025 Annual Meeting of the American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Biology takes place April 12–15 2025 in Chicago and MOBILES team will be represented by prof. Constantinos Varotsis from the Cyprus University of Technology.

Prof. Varotsis will present the poster on current research realised under the MOBILES project, where resonance Raman spectroscopy was combined with FTIR to investigate the 13C-enriched light-harvesting Fucoxanthin-Chlorophyll a/c-binding proteins (FCPs) in intact thylakoid membranes of the Marine Diatom. A Marine Diatom is a type of microscopic, single-celled algae that lives in oceans, seas, and other water bodies. Diatoms are a major group of phytoplankton and play a crucial role in the Earth's ecosystem being a primary food source and their ability to capture CO2. This research advances our understanding of how marine diatoms efficiently capture and transfer light energy.

This study explores how light-harvesting pigments in diatom thylakoid membranes function at physiological conditions, providing new spectroscopic insights into chlorophylls and carotenoids crucial for energy transfer. The findings contribute to knowledge about photoprotection mechanisms, which help diatoms survive under intense light conditions.
